FISH PUTTU SANDWICH

Traditionally, it is made using shark, but any fish can be used to make this recipe. It can be either had as a side dish for rice, or can also be used as a stuffing to make sandwich, samosas or puffs.
Fish puttu sandwich is made by stuffing fish puttu/scrambled fish between the bread slices and toasting them with butter. It is a perfect filling breakfast, or an after school snack for the kids. It doesn’t involve much oil or spices. It has a mild flavour to it, which makes it suitable for all age groups.
ABOUT THE RECIPE:
I’ve used baby tuna in this recipe, but any fish can be used. Traditional recipe for FISH PUTTU is made with a few extra spices compared to this recipe. This recipe is made with very few basic spices used in an Indian cooking, but tastes as good as the traditional recipe. Both the recipes works well for the sandwich.
INGREDIENTS FOR FISH PUTTU SANDWICH:
FOR FISH PUTTU:
- FISH – 500 GMS
- ONION (MEDIUM SIZE/DICED) – 1 NO.
- CHILLY POWDER – 1 TSP
- GARAM MASALA – 1/4 TSP
- TURMERIC POWDER – 1/2 TSP
- OIL – 1 TSP
- SALT – AS REQUIRED
- CURRY LEAVES – FOR GARNISHING
FOR SANDWICH:
- BREAD SLICE – 2 NOS.
- FISH PUTTU – 2~3 TBSP
- BUTTER – 1 TSP
HOW TO MAKE FISH PUTTU SANDWICH:
- Clean and wash the fish, and add it to a cooking pot.

- Add 1 litre of water and 1/2 tsp of turmeric powder to the pot.

- Turn on the flame, and let it boil for 10 to 15 minutes or until the fish is cooked completely.
- Once the fish is cooked completely, turn off the flame and let it cool down completely.

- Once it is cooled down completely, remove the fish from the water and separate the meat from the bones and the skin. The bones and the skin can be discarded.

- Shred the meat, and add 1 tsp of chilly powder, 1/4 tsp of garam masala and salt to the meat.

- Mix it well and keep it aside. This helps the meat to soak up all the flavours of the spices.

- Heat a kadai, and add 1 tsp of oil to it.

- Once the oil is heated, add the diced onions to it, and saute it until it turns translucent.

- Once the onions turn translucent, add the meat mixture to it and mix it well.

- Turn the flame to medium-low, and cook it for about 5 minutes, or until the onions and the meat combine together and changes color.

- Once it is combined together, garnish it with chopped curry leaves and turn off the flame.

- Fish puttu is ready. Let it cool down completely.

- Add 2~3 tbsp of fish puttu between the bread slices.

- Heat a pan, and add 1/2 tsp of butter and place the bread over the pan.

- Once it is toasted on one side, add butter on the other side and toast it.

YUMMY AND DELICIOUS FISH PUTTU SANDWICH IS READY.
