Drumstick soup is one of the traditional recipe made with drumstick. It is specifically made for lactating mother’s. Drumstick soup with steamed white rice is the meal, given to new mom’s on the second day after child birth. It helps to strengthen the pelvic bones, and also helps to increase the supply of breast milk.
Drumstick has a rich nutrient content, including vitamin A and C, antioxidants and minerals like calcium and potassium. It also helps to support immune system, improve digestion and strengthen bones.
ABOUT THE RECIPE:
This is an easy-to-make one pot recipe. I’ve used pressure cooker to make this recipe, but it can also be made in a pot. In a pot, on medium-high flame, it takes around 30 minutes to cook.
We use freshly grounded pepper and cumin seeds powder to this recipe. It gives an enhanced flavour to the recipe. Store bought ready-made pepper powder and cumin powder can also be used. Substitute the grounded mixture with 1 tsp of pepper powder and 1 tsp of cumin powder.
INGREDIENTS FOR DRUMSTICK SOUP:
FOR THE MASALA:
- PEPPERCORNS – 1 TSP
- CUMIN SEEDS – 1 TSP

MAIN INGREDIENTS:
- DRUMSTICK – 250 GMS
- ONION (MEDIUM SIZE/DICED) – 1 NO.
- TOMATO (MEDIUM SIZE/DICED) – 1 NO.
- GREEN CHILLY – 1 NO.
- CHILLY POWDER – 1/2 TSP (OPTIONAL)
- GARAM MASALA – 1/4 TSP
- GINGER GARLIC PASTE – 1 TSP
- GROUND MASALA – 2 TSP
- SALT – AS REQUIRED
- CURRY LEAVES – FOR GARNISHING
- CORIANDER LEAVES – FOR GARNISHING

HOW TO MAKE DRUMSTICK SOUP:
- Add 1 tsp of peppercorns and 1 tsp of cumin seeds to a blender, and blend it to a fine powder.
- In a pressure cooker, add the drumstick, onion, tomato, chilly powder, garam masala, ground masala, ginger garlic paste, green chilly and salt.

- Also, add 2 cups of water to it. Mix it well. Cover it and cook it for 3 whistles.

- After 3 whistles, turn off the flame. Once the pressure is released completely, open the lid.

- Add around 2 cups of water, to adjust the consistency.

- Turn on the flame and let it come to boil. Once it starts to boil, add the curry leaves and coriander leaves to it.

- When it starts to boil completely, turn off the flame.

YUMMY AND DELICIOUS DRUMSTICK SOUP IS READY.

IT CAN EITHER BE SERVED AS A SOUP, OR CAN ALSO BE SERVED WITH STEAMED RICE.
I HAD DRUMSTICK SOUP WITH STEAMED RICE AND MUTTON LIVER FRY.

VARIATIONS:
- This recipe can also be made in a pot. It takes a maximum of 30 minutes to cook in a pot.
- 1 tsp of pepper powder and 1 tsp of cumin powder can be substituted with freshly ground masala.
- Adding chilly powder is optional.
