Jeera rice or cumin rice is a popular rice dish of India. Rice and cumin seeds are the main ingredients of this dish. Whole garam masala can also be added to this recipe for the enhanced flavour. It has a mild flavour to it, and is suitable for all age groups.

Cumin seeds has a natural medicinal properties. It works well for digestion. Cumin rice can be served with any curries. Since, cumin rice has a mild flavour to it, any spicy vegetarian or non-vegetarian curry goes really well with it.

ABOUT THE RECIPE:

This is the recipe that I’ve been making for years. I usually make cumin rice in pressure cooker. Also, I don’t add any whole garam masala for this recipe. I love the cumin flavour in the recipe, and doesn’t really want to mix other flavours to it.

*I’ve used basmati rice for this recipe. Any kind of rice can be used.

INGREDIENTS FOR JEERA RICE:

  • BASMATI RICE – 1 CUP
  • CUMIN SEEDS – 1 TBSP
  • OIL – 1 TBSP
  • SALT – AS REQUIRED

FOR GARNISHING:

  • GREEN CHILLIES (FINELY CHOPPED)- 1 NO.
  • CORIANDER LEAVES (FINELY CHOPPED) – FOR GARNISHING

HOW TO MAKE JEERA RICE:

  • Wash and soak 1 cup of basmati rice for 20 minutes.
  • Heat a pressure cooker and, add 1 tbsp of oil to it.
  • Once the oil is heated, add 1 tbsp of cumin seeds to it. The cumin seeds will start to fry as soon as it is added to the oil.
  • Once it starts to fry, drain the water, and add the basmati rice to the pressure cooker.
  • Also add the required amount of salt to it.
  • To 1 cup of rice add 1.5 cups of water.
  • Mix everything well. Cover it, and cook it for 1 whistle. After 1 whistle turn off the flame.
  • Once pressure is released completely, open the pressure cooker.
  • Add finely chopped green chilly and coriander leaves to it.
  • Mix it gently, without breaking the rice.

YUMMY AND DELICIOUS JEERA RICE IS READY.

SERVE IT WITH YOUR FAVOURITE CURRY.

I HAD MY JEERA RICE WITH BUTTER GARLIC MUSHROOM.

VARIATIONS:

  • Any kind of rice can be used.
  • Adding green chilly is optional.
