Fish fry or Meen varuval is the most popular dish of south India. Fish fry is actually, fish marinated in a spice mixture and fried in oil. Any kind of fish is suitable for this recipe. It can either be used as a whole, or can be used in the form of steak.

This dish will be on top of the favorite list, for any seafood lover. I’m pretty sure, you would probably finish it before it’s being served, because that’s exactly what I used to do.We usually make it to pair with rice and fish kulambu. But why should you wait ? It can be a great starter too.

ABOUT THE RECIPE

Fish fry is really easy to make, yet delicious. There are a lot of recipes for fish fry. It is probably a no-fail recipe, which anyone can make. This particular recipe is so easy and can be made with really simple ingredients, that is readily available in any home.

INGREDIENTS FOR FISH FRY

FISH – 1KG

Any kind of fish can be used. If you take whole fish, make sure to make a slit ,so that the fish gets marinated really well.I have taken steaks of black pomfret. Clean and wash the fish thoroughly with rock salt.

CHILLY POWDER – 3 TBSP

Chilly powder gives the spiciness for the dish.

CORIANDER POWDER – 1. 5 TBSP

Coriander powder is used to balance the spiciness of the dish. It also adds a great flavour to it.

CUMIN POWDER – 1 TBSP

Cumin powder helps in digestion, since it is fried in oil.

PEPPER POWDER – 1 TBSP

Pepper powder is used to balance the lemon juice that we add to this recipe.

TURMERIC POWDER – 1/2 TSP

Turmeric powder has anti-inflammatory properties. It is generally used in every Indian cooking.

LEMON JUICE – 1 NO

Lemon juice gives the tanginess to the dish.

GINGER GARLIC PASTE– 2 TBSP

Since this dish is fried, it may cause acidity. Ginger garlic paste eliminates acidity and helps with easy digestion.

CURRY LEAF – 10 -15 LEAVES

Curry leaves give the main flavour to this dish.

SALT – 2 TSP

OIL – FOR FRYING

HOW TO MAKE FISH FRY:

1 . In a large mixing bowl, add all the ingredients, except fish.

2 . Mix all the ingredients. Add little water if required. Mix everything until it comes to a paste like consistency.

*Fish marination masala is ready.

3 . Add fish, one slice at a time, and apply the masala to all the fish slices. Make sure the masala is evenly coated on all sides of the fish.

4 . Cover the mixing bowl, and place it in the fridge. Let it rest for 2 – 3 hours.

5 . After 2 – 3 hours, remove in from the fridge.

6 . Heat a pan and pour 3-4 tbsp of oil to it. When the oil heats up, add the marinated fish to the pan.

7 . Cook on medium-low, for 5 minutes on each side.

YUMMY AND DELICIOUS FISH FRY IS READY.

SERVE IT AS A STARTER OR AS A SIDE DISH FOR RICE.

I HAD FISH FRY WITH RICE AND MEEN KULAMBU.

VARIATIONS:

  • You can adjust the spiciness as per your taste. If you like it less spicy, you can reduce the amount of chilly powder added.
  • I added juice of one whole lemon to 1 kg of fish, as I like the tanginess of it. If you don’t like it, you can add half lemon instead of one whole lemon.
  • The amount of ginger garlic paste added can also be adjusted according to your taste. If you don’t like the flavour, you can reduce the amount of ginger garlic paste.
