Matar rice is an easy and a comforting meal made with rice and green peas. It is an easy-to-make, one pot recipe, made with really simple ingredients. It is vegan, non spicy and is full of flavours. It can be served to all age groups and is a great lunch box recipe.

Matar rice can be served either with Raita, Fryums or any curries. Any vegan, vegetarian and non vegetarian curries goes really well with this recipe. This recipe is also perfect to be served for functions, parties or family gatherings.

ABOUT THE RECIPE:

I’ve made this recipe using a pressure cooker. It takes a maximum of just 15 minutes to make this recipe in a pressure cooker. I’ve used frozen peas in this recipe. Fresh or dried peas can also be used. While using dried peas, make sure to soak the peas in water for at least 8 hours before adding it to the recipe.

INGREDIENTS FOR MATAR RICE:

  • BASMATI RICE – 1 CUP
  • GREEN PEAS – 1/2 CUP
  • ONIONS (MEDIUM SIZE/THINLY SLICED) – 2 NOS.
  • GREEN CHILLIES – 1 NO.
  • GINGER GARLIC PASTE – 1 TSP
  • SALT – AS REQUIRED
  • OIL – 2 TBSP

WHOLE GARAM MASALA:

  • BAY LEAF – 1 NO.
  • CINNAMON STICK – 2 INCH
  • CARDAMOM – 4 NOS.
  • CLOVES – 4 NOS.
  • STAR ANISE – 1 NO.

HOW TO MAKE MATAR RICE:

  • Wash and soak the basmati rice in water for about 15 – 20 minutes.

  • Heat a pressure cooker, and add 2 tbsp of oil to it.

  • Once the oil is heated, add all the whole garam masala to it.

  • Once it start to fry, add the sliced onions to it. Also, add the salt to it and saute it until it turns translucent.

  • Once the onions turn translucent, add the green chilly to it. Also, add the ginger garlic paste to it.

  • Mix it well. Let it cook until the oil start to separate. It takes around 30-40 seconds on medium-high flame.

  • Once the oil start to separate, add 1.5 cups of water to it. To 1 cup of rice, add 1.5 cup of water.

  • Also, add 1/2 cup of green peas to it and mix it well.

  • Cook it until the green peas are 50% done. It takes around 3 minutes on medium-high flame.

  • After 3 minutes, filter the water and add the basmati rice to it.

  • Mix it well. Cover the lid and cook it for 1 whistle.

  • After 1 whistle, turn off the flame. Once the pressure is released completely, open the lid. Mix it gently without breaking the rice.

YUMMY AND DELICIOUS MATAR RICE IS READY.
