TARTAR SAUCE
Jump to Recipe

Tartar sauce is a creamy, tangy condiment commonly served with seafood dishes. It is typically made from a base of mayonnaise mixed with chopped pickle or relish, lemon juice and herbs such as parsley or dill.

Tartar sauce has a smooth and creamy texture, with small crunchy bits from the pickles or onions. It has a slightly sour, salty and refreshing flavour, which helps balance the rich taste of fried foods. It is most often used as a dip or topping for dishes like fried fish, fish and chips, shrimp or crab cakes, adding extra flavour and moisture to the dish.

ABOUT THE RECIPE:

Dill pickle or relish can be used for this recipe. Dill pickles gives a slightly sour and salty flavour, whereas relish gives a mild sweet flavour to the recipe. I’ve used finely chopped baby dill pickles for this recipe. Since, baby dill pickle has a crunchy and firmer texture, it is most commonly preferred for any sauces or dips.

I generally prefer freshly made tartar sauce. Freshly made tartar sauce tastes best, compared to the refrigerated or store-bought. It is an easy-to-make recipe, which hardly takes just 3 to 4 minutes to make. This recipe serves 3~4.

NOTE:

Tartar sauce can be stored in the refrigerator for about 2 to 3 days. Freezing is not recommended because the mayonnaise base separates when thawed, ruining the texture.
